In 2018, Interserve, the international support services and construction group, was awarded a £10m five-year contract to assemble and dissemble the grandstand The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, running until 2022.
Riddell PM was invited to create a bespoke digital Information System using our Pyramid Digital Building Manual system to aid in the presentation and access of almost 4,000 files such as drawings, certificates, programme’s, videos, method statements and Health & Safety Files.
The fast-track 22-week onsite element of the job has three main components, with the first being the 42-day build and fit-out period that begins in May of each year. It concludes immediately following the concert and tattoo programme, when the final dismantle element begins which spans 39 days until the end of October. The Grandstand is then returned to a storage facility in Livingston, 20km to the West of Edinburgh.
Interserve’s role covers the storage, logistics, mobilisation, erection, operation during the shows as well as dismantling of the grandstand. Interserve also install all of the cabins for the VIP units and the technical suite, the WC facilities and the performer’s accommodation.
Over 800 trucks are involved in making sure the right materials arrive on site at the right time during the construction and dismantling phases. With approximately 10,000 tourists per day visiting Edinburgh Castle, health and safety is absolutely paramount.
The overall process has been continually improved and perfected since the annual international event first started performing on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade in 1950. Works are undertaken during restricted times with extra planning and provisions made to overcome any adverse weather.
