The Grade B listed Marr College in Troon was extensively refurbished and a new extension building added by Kier Construction and Hub South West Scotland on behalf of South Ayrshire Council.
Copper-domed Marr College has been a feature of the Troon skyline for the past 82 years. Work included converting two open central courtyards into three-storey high learning plazas, and rationalising the Troon Community Sports Hub to accommodate two all-weather rugby and hockey pitches as well as other community sports facilities.
A new technical wing was constructed at the rear of the original building with an atrium slot created between the two buildings. This area provides dining, library, informal learning and social spaces.
The new technical wing extension houses the majority of these service heavy equipment spaces, allowing the internal alterations to the main building and its listed interiors to be kept to a minimum.
All indoor sports facilities have been incorporated into a new single-storey sports block which is strategically located on site to the south of the original building and close to the existing footpath link to the outdoor sports pitches at the Marr Community Sports Hub.
